School Infrastructure

Ken has worked hard to improve the maintenance of Newton's schools and to make sure that adequate resources are available to create and to maintain quality learning environments at all levels.

Many of Newton's elementary schools have suffered from under-sized libraries, lack of adequate tutorial space, lack of auditoriums, and other serious deficiencies to the point where students at some schools were being counseled or tutored in janitorial closets and music instruction took place in damp basements. Faced with this situation, Ken advocated strongly and effectively for the Tier One Elementary School renovations, which addressed these problems at three schools.

Ken also advocated for a more cost-effective site plan for the new Newton North High School, which would have provided a state of the art high school, while leaving adequate resources for badly-needed capital improvements to Newton's other schools.
