| Reducing Pollution
The biggest source of pollution in Newton is automobile traffic. I have worked on reducing traffic by promoting public transportation. I have advocated policy changes that reduce gridlock, improve traffic flow, and increase parking availability.
For example, Alderman George Mansfield and I led the effort to reconfigure parking and turn lanes in Newton Centre, reducing the time it takes to get past Beacon St. on Centre St. during rush hour by a full light cycle. Over time, that one change alone will reduce the hydrocarbons in our air by hundreds of pounds. I also worked with the Cohen Administration to arrange the purchase of an ultra-low emission hybrid vehicle for the Health Department.
Currently, I am working on a proposal to provide auto excise tax incentives to all Newton residents who purchase environmentally-friendly vehicles. |
